hi r/woodworking,
i just bought a used kitchen cabinet with a work surface that has been used for cooking. the whole thing is massive and heavy, a carpenter's piece from 20ish years ago, made from european beech. i quite like it!
however my question is, how do i get the work surface to be trustworthy again? it's pretty dirty. should i just scrape off the dark spots, sand it smooth again and apply wood finish? i thought about bringing it to a woodshop and have them run it through their thickness planer to cleanly take off the upper layer. here are some pictures, the middle part is where i scraped, the second picture is from the dirtier part. i think that turned out pretty ok, but is that enough to make it reasonably food-safe again?
