We love the ease of room temperature butter, but always struggled with the average butter dishes. They are messy and don't keep the butter from going rancid or even very fresh.
After looking for alternatives I finally got a butter bell, and absolutely love it. They work by stuffing butter in the inverted bell, which is then kept submerged in water. The butter stays in the inverted bell via surface tension, which also keeps it fresh.
After doing some research, helpful tips include: this only works with butter (not margarine, or any other butter mixture) and works best with salted butter.
