I'm 5'4" and 110lbs. When I met my now-ex boyfriend at age 18, he was 6'3" and ~210 lbs (perhaps slightly heavier). He slimmed down to 200lbs during our 3-yr relationship, then went up to (at least) 230 lbs post-breakup.
I was shocked when I first saw my SO's family. I knew his parents were both doctors, so I assumed they'd be shitlords like mine. Instead, they were AT LEAST 300-350 lbs each, complete with fupas. His sisters were also very obese, which was surprising because his 3 brothers were athletic, ripped, blonde & blue-eyed. They looked like models.
One year, our families went on a higher-end European cruise. The food (including the buffet) was delicious and abundant-- surrounded by fresh pastries, cream puffs and everything else imaginable 24/7. Being a natural shitlord (I'm Taiwanese), I worked out religiously to offset the calories. My family also ate most of our meals on the ship; why pay for extra food on an all-inclusive vacation?
In contrast: my ex's family bought mountains of potato chips and sweets at EVERY port to refuel while they walked little 500m walks along the portside-- they ate CONSTANTLY. At the end of the day, they were always 'exhausted.' I have no idea how they continued to eat all day, every day after all the eating we did on the ship.
They were full of fatlogic-- my ex would often say "so-and-so doesn't even look his/her weight, people carry their weight differently," etc..-- but I didn't realize how fully desensitized they were to sugar, fat and salt until he spent a week at my family's cottage the next summer.
At the cottage, my mom made her usual healthy, balanced meals. She can go a bit overboard at times, but it's generally good food (except the plain, boiled kale): lightly seasoned meats, rice/rice noodles, vegetables, fruit. My family also eats some chocolate, but in moderation.
My ex was miserable the entire week. He tried not to show it, but on the last night of the trip, he'd had enough. My mom made gorgeous roasts and steaks, lightly seasoned. The rest of us trimmed the large chunks of fat off the sides. My ex, however, not only ate all the fat, but ate the fat trimmings off everyone else's plates as well. He later told me it was because he couldn't stand my mom's cooking; it was all "bland and disgusting," and the beef fat was apparently the only decent food he'd tasted all week.
Dozens of other ham incidents led to our breakup, but my biggest worry was that our kids would grow up with ham-habits: because hams generally seem to have poor lifestyles + poor money management skills. My ex thought it was ok for his sisters to play computer games 8 hrs a day and hoped to play lots of Zelda with his own kids. I want my kids to play sports like my siblings did.
Ex was also convinced he'd look "anorexic" if he went below 200lbs, when in fact he'd still be overweight by BMI ("but oh well, BMI is bullshit anyway!") He spent $160/month on a gym membership, but went once a week on a GOOD week. He also never complained about the expense of eating McDonald's burgers, but complained that buying gas for the 13-min drive to the gym was super expensive.
I have so many more stories to share (especially about his rather nasty hamily), but I don't want to violate Rule 6. So, alas... maybe I'll stop by again soon and turn this into a serial.
