Kitty Cat

"Why couldn't I just stay home?" Pouted Phillip.

His widowed mother sighed not taking her eyes off the road. "Because I said so and anyways you're not old enough to stay home just yet."

Holding back his frustration Phillip idly picked at a scab on his hand. "When will I be old enough? I'm already in grade one Mom."

"When you reach my age you can stay all alone at home, but until then you will always be with me... Unless you're at school, okay?" She gives a quick smirking glance at Phillip then back at the road. "And quit picking at that! Let it heal."

Phillip drags his hands down his face. "I'm not dumb mom I know I can never catch up. You're WAY too old."

His mother gawks an awkward expression choosing to ignore his remark. "When we get to Father Hensly's house, I want you to be extra nice and don't be mean alright? You can even play with the twins, Shelia and Don?"

Phillip takes a deep breath. "It's Shelly and Billy mom."

"Right I knew their names rhymed, why did I say Don?" Phillip's mother took a left turn going uphill towards the church.

"But they're always so weird at school, no one ever wants to talk to them." Phillip notices the church and feels a chill. "That place is so creepy! Why are we coming here?"

His mother starts to chuckle. "Creepy? That's God's house, you shouldn't be saying that." She switches to a side road leading towards a house beside the church. "Look even if they are weird, you always have to be nice to everyone. It's the right thing to do Phillip."

"Fine... How long are we going to be here?" Phillip feels the car slowing down and begins to unbuckle himself.

His mother parks the car and shuts the engine off. "We're just going to have supper, say a few prayers then head back home. It won't be too long."

Phillip annoyed, nods his head and they both get out. He stares at a big vine covered cross in front of the church he understood to be Jesus dying for something, but he couldn't remember. His eyes react quickly noticing Billy behind the church peeking around the corner at him then gesturing a 'shhh' with his finger.

"Phillip! Come say hello to Father Hensly" Phillip sees his mother waving him on over with the Father standing next to her with a big smile.

Phillip walks over waving his hand hello.

"Hello Phillip and how are you today?" Hensly pats Phillip's head as Phillip shrugs a 'meh'. Hensly laughs slightly. "Hey, I think I saw Shelly counting in the back yard, I think the twins are playing hide and seek. It's their favorite game to play. Why don't you go have some fun with them while your mother and I get dinner ready? What do you say little man?"

Phillip's Mother and Hensly made their way inside chatting away. Suddenly Phillip felt coldness behind him.

"Hey."

Phillip turned around so fast he fell on his bottom. It was Shelly standing above him.

"Sorry, did I scare you?" Shelly giggles.

Phillip jumps up to a stand, patting away the dust off his bottom. "No. Not even a little, I just tripped on myself turning around."

Shelly still giggling. "Okay." She looks around then leans closer to Phillip. "Hey, you didn't happen to see Billy anywhere, did you?"

Phillip almost points towards the church then remembered the 'shh', shaking his head."Nope. I just got here."

"I guess so." Shelly smiles then takes a big breath and yells. "BILLY COME OUT! I KNOW YOU'RE BEHIND THE CHURCH! NEW GAME, PHILLIPS HERE NOW!"

Phillip faces towards the church expecting to see Billy run on over.

"You didn't tell her, did you?"

Again, Phillip turned to fast falling on his bottom. This time getting up even quicker patting the dust off again, embarrassed.

"He didn't have to tell me. You ALWAYS hide behind the church that's why I'm happy we get to play with someone new this time." Shelly pulls out a lollipop from her pocket licking it.

"No I don't! Hey we can't have those till after supper. Daddy said so." Billy eases then turns to Phillip with a smirk. "He gets scared easy, huh?"

Phillip's cheeks blushed red. "How did you get here so fast anyways?"

Billy grins. "Magic."

Shelly laughs. "Alright! Hide and seek. Phillip you come find us cause your new. Me and Billy know all the best hiding spots so try to be fast."

"Yea! New guy has to find! Count to sixty! You can do that right?" Billy teased.

"Of course I can!" Phillip lies, only being taught to count up to thirty.

"Alright you can count here. Oh yea, Billy no hiding behind the church to the basement cause Phillip doesn't know how to get in there." Shelly and Billy share misschievous glances.

"Okay start!" Shelly and Billy say in sync.

Phillip walks towards his mother's car and hides his head against it blocking all his view. Hearing them run off, but wanting to ask he looks back. "Hey! how far..." Both Shelly and Billy somehow vanished within mere seconds. Phillip goes back to hiding his sight, quietly saying. "I hope they don't go far."

Phillip counts up to thirty then starts to mumble gibberish, sounding like counting.

"See I told you he can't count." Phillip heard in a whisper.

He Jerks his head around but no one was around, confused and timid he begins to count again only up to ten then shouts. "READY OR NOT, HERE I COME!"

Phillip begins by running behind the house and discovers the twin's small fort. He hears giggles coming from within. He opens the door fast. "I foun..." Empty.

He sneaks around to the back of the fort hoping they were actually there so he could try and scare them back. He peeks around the corner but sees no one but a path in the tall grass with little amount of bush. He walks up to the path but something catches his eye. On the ground was what looked to be three black candles around a pile of dead mice, some with their insides out. "Eww." Phillip squats down and picks up a candle examining it for a moment. He hears the sound of running behind him.

"Hey!" Phillip drops the candle gets up and starts chasing. He makes it past the brush and suddenly stops. He figured he was behind the church and could see the basement doors. Slowly, he walked up to it. Giggling could be heard from inside. "Shelly told you no hiding in there Billy! You broke the rules!" Then silence.

Phillip watched as the trees waved back and forth from a mild wind, but there was no sound at all. Nervously he starts to pick at his scab as giggles start to come back followed by a whisper. "See I told you he gets scared easy."

"No I don't! Ouch!" Phillip looks at his scab, he had accidentally made it bleed again and just as sudden, noise came back. He could hear the winds and bustling of the leaves.

He pulls up his pants in a huff and puff marching on, swinging one of the basement doors open stomping down the stairs. He stood in the center of an empty room with another door padlocked. Abruptly, the door he came through slammed shut. Once again he turns to fast falling on his bottom...

"Don't be so scared Phillip." Shelly giggles.

"Yea man, you're the first one brave enough to come down this way." Billy pats him on the back.

Phillip smiles getting back up after hearing this, then changes to confusion. "I thought you guys said no hidi..."

Shelly cuts him off. "It was a test Phillip. You see, sometimes."

"You gatta break some rules." Billy finishes handing Phillip a lollipop.

Phillip takes the lollipop. "So what now? Again? Hide and seek?" Then puts the lollipop into his mouth.

"No, now we finally get to play a new game." Shelly grinned.

"So far only me and Shelly got this far. Everyone else always ends up crying and leaving during hide and seek." Billy grinned.

"And now somebody new can finally play." The twins say in sync.

"Okay! Sounds fun!" Phillip exclaims.

"This new game is to put you into our club Phillip." Shelly looks at Billy.

"It's a secret club." Billy looks at Shelly.

Phillip in awe puts on a big smile. "A secret club? That sounds so cool!"

The twins face Phillip in sync. "But you can't be scared."

"I'm never scared!" Phillip passionately states

The twins lean a bit closer to Phillip. "You have to do exactly as we say."

Phillip nods still having his big smile. Billy moves to the far side wall tapping it three times. The wall fades showing an opening to a small room. "Whoa! How'd you do that?!" Phillip amazed.

With a big long grin Billy whispers loudly. "Magic!"

Shelly walks towards Billy, standing on each side of the opening in the wall. In sync they bow down gesturing their hands towards the opening. "Come on in Phillip."

Phillip walks slowly almost shaking from excitement. "Will I be able to do magic too?"

Billy and Shelly look up at him. "Yes, and much more."

Phillip steps into the small room and three black candles light up around him showing three connecting mirrors all in a triangle. A knife floats down from out of no where, Phillip catches it, a bit worried looking back at the twins.

"It's easy just..." Magically from behind Billy's back Phillip hears the snarls and hisses of a cat. The cat floats around Billy heading to Phillip. "Take this cat."

Phillip looks at it timidly.

"Don't worry we won't let it bite or scratch. Don't be scared." Shelly giggles.

Phillip takes the cat swiftly. "I was just thinking, I wasn't scared."

The twins laugh. "Good! Now just use that knife and kill it while your standing there while we use magic words to make you magic too!"

Phillip looks at the cat. "But killing is... Bad."

"You said you would do what we said Phillip." Shelly snarled.

Phillip looks at the cat and knife again. Voice shaking "I... I, I don't wanna play anymore guys."

"See I told you he was scared." Billy said to Shelly.

"I'm not scared! This is just wrong! Killing is bad!" Phillip argued.

The twins laughed then Shelly touched the opening as if there was a wall. "Well you see, it's not a game Phillip. There's only one way to get out now, and that's to kill the cat, and get magic like us! Or be taken away through the mirrors. All of them Phillip. In three pieces... Of you!"

Phillip anxiously chuckles. "Come on guys stop joking, let me out." Phillip drops the cat and knife to walk out but hits an invisible wall. He pushes harder and harder with no luck.

"As soon as we start saying our magic spell you have to kill it before we're done Phillip. You got about ten seconds." Billy smirks and nods at the same time.

The twins immediately start chanting some weird words in sync.

Panicked Phillip starts hitting the invisible wall harder, the twins still chanting smiling widely. He picks up the knife. "STOP IT!" He screams then stabs the invisible wall to no effect. "I SAID STOP!" Phillip starts kicking and stabbing the mirrors trying to break them but they were unbreakable. Phillip hears the volume of their words going dimmer. He looks at the cat and whispers. "I'm sorry," he lifts the knife high above his head, looks at the cat screaming in silence. "I'M SORRY!"

"Hey you kids."

The twins turn around calmly. "Hi daddy!" they say in sync.

"Wheres Phillip?" Hensly asked walking down the stairs.

"We can't find him." Shelly answered.

"He hides WAY to good, so we gave up and started drawing on this wall." Billy replied.

Hensly looks at the wall of drawings, some rainbows and flowers with Jesus walking in the sunshine. "Alright well come on, I'll help you guys look, Phillip's mother and I feel we should pray before the food is done cooking so we can get straight to eating." Hensly motions up the stairs smiling.

"Okay daddy!" The Twins run joyfully outside.

Hensly takes one last look around, he notices a drawing on the wall near the floor of a boy with a sad face. He got slight chills but shrugged it off and stepped out, closing the door.
