Hi. This is my first time posting here.
I am working on a game made in RPG maker XP and have been working on it for like two years now in my free time. Everything is going fine, but I would like to know what things would people like to see in my game. Despite the time I spent working on this game, it is still pretty early in development. Most of the basic systems are done, but I am still using placeholder graphics and huge chunk of the actual content is still missing.
The game I am working on is a mix of multiple genres. Main inspirations were: Princess maker, harvest moon and gothic I and II.
STORY: Not really that important I think, but I will tell you the basics anyway.
The year is 2048. Russians control the world and they put all criminals on some kind of island. You play as 10 years old girl and you get sent on this island with your parents. You parents die before you reach your destination and now you have to survive in this place alone. Before you leave the ship, you get a letter you are suposed to deliver to a very dangerous criminal. You have 9 years to do so.
Thats basicaly it. I simplified it a lot, but that is basicaly it.
GAMEPLAY-WORLD: This where the fun begins. Some of this stuff will be hard for me to explain since I am not native english speaker.
The game is set in a open world made of "zones". You can visit each zone by using a sign post, but first you need to know the location of said zone. This can be done in multiple ways. Finding some kind of map or diary describing the way or asking some NPC. Each zone is separated into two parts. Overworld and underground. The overwolrd is pretty safe (depending on the zone you are currently in). You might still meet some wild animals or bandits, but nothing major. Underground is very dangerous. Not only is it full of enemies, but staying there too long can make your character very unhappy.
GAMEPLAY-STATRAISING: This is the meat of the game. You spend most of your time raising your main characters stats. These are separated in multiple categories. The main ones are representing your characters physique and skills. Stats can be raised in three ways. First is combat. At the end of a fight, one random physical stat will get increased by one. Hardly a good way to get stronger. Better way to increase your stats is to work for NPCs. This will take 7 in game days and will raise both your physical and skill stats (depends on the kind of job you do). The best way to increase your stats is by training with NPCs. This is really expensive though.
There are multiple reasons for raising your stats. Getting better in combat is one of them. Getting certain stat high enough will allow you to learn new skills, like gutting animals, cooking different food, smithing new tools and so on.
GAMEPLAY-TIME: Time will be advancing in this game, but only when you do certain actions. Walking around, talking to people, fighting and other actions don't advance time, but working or training will advance time by 7 days. This makes the game unique in multiple ways.
First, your character will ge visibly older the longer you play. You have 9 years to finish the main task. Human body changes a lot between ages 10 and 19.
Another thing that is kind of rare in other games is the result of your decisions and the world changing on its own in general. Trees will start dissappearing near human settlements, some people will be dying of old age and other illneses, factions will fight for teritories, old buildings will get more and more desolate and so on.
GAMEPLAY-BRANCHING: The full game will be pretty short. Around 5-8 hours long. But I am putting extreme care into replayability. There will be many encounters through out the game that will play out differently depending on your stats and previous choices. Here is one example: You will meet a bunch of hungry miners. There are multiple things you can do. Talk to them and give them some food and you will get rewarded few weeks later. Leave them alone and you will find out few weeks later that the mine they were working in collapsed because they were too weak to work properly. Attack them and you will get no reward, the mine will get abandoned and prices of iron ore will increase in that zone.
Doing things like this is not hard. It just takes time. And I already spent two years on this game so I see no reason to stop now.
This are the very basics of my game. I need some help with things like crafting recipes, NPC ideas, encounter ideas,... Anything you can think of. If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask.
Here is a random picture showing the WIP character screen:
And if you are intersted, here is my development blog. I update it once every week:
