Bit of background- im a mama to two boys. Aged 4 & 3. Both have food allergies. Hubby has a food allergy too, i, myself do not. Cooking for the family is awesome fun some times!!! 😐 Today started out as usual, but it was 4yr olds last day at kinder. Dropped him off at kinder, went home to tidy up before my 3 yr old, hubby & I went back to watch the kids concert. Parents brought along plenty of food, had to keep an eye on both kids but they're both pretty understanding of their allergies. All was ok. After the kids played & we thanked & said bye to the teachers, off to grocery shopping the lil guys & i went. Hubby had to get back to work. Went to Aldi & got what we needed. Saw little snack boxes of fruit & nuts. Gave them a quick read over & thought it was ok. 3 yr old had recent challenge to almond & cashew & was fine. They are the nuts i thought were only in it. Off to Coles next & 3 yr old getting a bit antsy sitting in the trolley. I decided to get him to try the little fruit & nut mix. I even read over it again, thought it was cool. So, opened it up & he had a little nut. Started coughing, sooking & wanting hugs. I thought a nut must've got stuck in his throat or tickled it. Looked at his face & jeez.... lips were swollen. Holding my 3yr old & asking my to keep close, i left my trolley full of paid for Aldi stuff & not paid Coles stuff at the registers & told the lady my son is having an allergic reaction & i gotta get his medicine from the car. 4 yr old needed to pee too. Arrrhhhh....Got to the car, told 4 yr old to just pee towards front of my car, gave 3 yr old Zyrtec, 4 yr old crying coz he got wee on his undies.... told him its ok & not to stress & went back inside the centre. Asked at the pharmacy where the GP was located & pretty much ran there with my little guys. Must've looked like crazed Christmas shoppers or something! Told the receptionist that my son needs to see the Dr as he is having an allergic reaction. Went into another room where i told the nurse what happened, she checked over him, his breathing, air way , temp etc & all ok. Dr came in & checked him over too. Poor baby threw up a couple times too. Dr said to hang around for a while, lil guy fell asleep. Left the GP with my sleeping & still swollen faced 3yr old. 4 yr old following closely again. Went back to Coles where the lady i spoke to was relieved to see me again. She offered to put through my groceries, got my wallet out of my bag & paid for me. As this was happening we were talking about what happened when i re- read the ingredients on that fruit & nut mix. Guess what! I saw peanuts & my heart sank!! It was MY FAULT ! Both my sons are allergic to peanuts. Told the lady ' you know how fken st i feel right about now '....she was so lovely though, no judgement. The staff got a young guy to help me & bring my trolley to my car which was parked right at the end of the car park. 4 yr old hanging onto my bag, 3 yr old fast asleep & me fighting the tears welling up in my eyes. Not sure why i want to share this story, i guess for other people, mothers, fathers- anyone who cares for another person in general to know mistakes happen... no matter how vigilant we can be. We're human. I feel sooo drained right about now & feel like the worst mother right about now, while my 3 yr old is playing & is happy. Kids are resilient little people. Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas & stay safe!
