New to healthy eating, where's the High Cholesterol for Dummies handbook?

My husband just found out that his cholesterol is dangerously high (as well as probable liver disease/problems) so we're really trying to buckle down and get serious about nutrition. I've never been very good or disciplined about eating right or healthy so I'm completely in the dark with this. Are there any good resources for us to start with? Grocery lists, simple meal ideas (I'm not much of a cooking genius, either) or pretty much like the title suggests. If there's resources/tools for people who know nothing about any of this, please point me in that direction. Thaanks in advance

EDIT: also would like to know what I need to look for/avoid on food label?
