Have you ever thought of trying Dwarf Fortress but were turned off by the low graphics (even with mod packs) and complicated interface?

It's an older one, and a classic "DF Lite" game where the object is to build a fortress for your gnomes much the same as you would your dwarves in DF. It adds isometric view so that you can dig downward and build upwards - something I appreciated since this was confusing for me in Dwarf Fortress even with LazyNewbPack graphics running.
The production chains are complicated but not too complicated and are a good introduction to base-building supply chain management such as growing food, cooking food, manufacturing building materials, training gnomes as fighters and equipping them. These are all things you do in Dwarf Fortress as well.
Gnomoria helped me take the plunge and actually learn to play Dwarf Fortress so I could understand just how complex and amazing the storytelling in that game really is.
Few games (with the exception of Rimworld) being developed these days match this complexity so I feel Gnomoria deserves some attention and praise for at least tackling it on a playable level. The developer "released" it as-is which annoyed a lot of it's die-hard fans as they were expecting far more content. I personally feel it's very engaging as a beginner Dwarf Fortress game.
At the cost of a cup of coffee, it's worth a try!
