Monsters:
Main: Main was a goat child who fell into the Underground a long time ago. Main is the true name in this story. Main befriended a human in the Underground named Chara long ago. Nobody yet knows what happened to Main and Chara but their story is told as the gamer plays through the game. Main is the essence of power and the 1st monster essence introduced into the Underground.
Asriel: Asriel is the pacifist form of your character. Though this is not discovered till after Chara is saved. Asriel has the essence of power just like Main. Asriel is the 8th essence introduced into the Underground.
Power can be used for good or evil
Monster (6 essences of LOVE):
Guidance: Guidance is the goat woman face. The gamer is led to believe this essence enjoys cooking pies as during the battle an oven appears and pies shoot out of it.
Confidence: Confidence is the skinny smiling skeleton face. The gamer is led to believe this essence enjoys puzzles as puzzle pieces fly out at the gamer in random directions.
Honor: Honor is the fish girl face with the eye patch. The gamer is lead to believe this essence used a spear to fight in battle as spears fly down at the gamer in a barrage.
Flamboyancy: Flamboyancy is the robot face with the black hair. The gamer is lead to believe this essence likes to dance as a disco ball during the battle shoots down rays of light that can harm the gamer.
Nobility: Nobility is the male goat face with horns, blonde hair, a beard and a crown. The gamer is led to believe this monster enjoyed gardening as a water can drops bullets out that hurt the gamer during battle.
Tenacity: Tenacity is the larger, rounder looking smiling skeleton face. In the battle with this essence, weird looking skeleton faces appear and lasers fire out of their mouths. This attack is said to be called the Gaster Blaster attack.
Humans:
Frisk: Frisk is the first human you meet. They are very kind and gentle. They guide you around the Underground holding your hand. They block the way so you don't venture further into the underground and get hurt by the other humans. (Spoiler: When killed by Goodie, the soul that flies into Goodie is red)
Starbright: Starbright is one half of the star sisters. She values integrity most out of anything else. Reputation is important to her and taking accountability for ones actions. She wears bows in her hair, rainbow stockings and a sparkly multicolored tutu. (Spoiler: When killed by Goodie, the soul that flies into Goodie is Dark Blue)
Starlight: Starlight is the other half of the star sisters. She desperately wants to capture a monster to study its behaviors so she can be a famous researcher like her hero Dr. Studier. She is rather nerdy and clunky when it comes to her mannerisms. She also has a questionable sense of humor and has been known to be very patient with other people. Shes armed with a flashlight and will try to disorient a monster just enough to capture and study it. (Spoiler: When killed by Goodie, the soul that flies into Goodie is Light Blue)
Dr. Studier: Doctor Studier runs the gigantic research center called Lavafalls Institute. (It is called Lavafalls Institute because flowing lava pours into chambers which heat the facility). He studies monster dust for the commander as means to obtain the secret to getting humans out of the underground. Starlight idolizes him and trains under him as a lab assistant. He attacks any monsters with high tech traps and gadgets. (Spoiler: When killed by Goodie, the soul that flies into Goodie is Purple)
Calmcalla: Calmcalla is a cook / potion brewer who runs the Happy Harvest Cafe and Brewary in Pondland. Calmcalla was assigned by the commander to cook foods and brew potions which can make humans powerful enough to break the barrier and escape the underground. (Spoiler 1: Calmcalla has a secret cookary where she cooks foods with herbs that can change a human's body chemistry. Feeding humans these foods have created creatures known as abominations, beings which were once human but not anymore.) One of Calmcalla's more successful experiments is Grust, a pumped up musclehead bully who will pound any monster that crosses his path. (Spoiler 2: When killed by Goodie, the soul that flies into Goodie is Green)
Grusty: Nasty arrogant and will step on anyone in his path. Grust was given an herbal concoction which gives him incredible strength. Upon getting through Pondland, the gamer will come across Grusty's fitness center which Grust runs and operates. The confrontation with Grusty will occur in Powerheart where monster and human souls together power the Underground.
Wimpus: Wimpus is the 11 year old son of Grusty. He has a scraggly and skinny appearance. You'll first encounter Wimpus in the ruins and then again in Lavafalls Institute on the third floor where he lives. (Spoiler: Getting a key will get you into the East Wing which is where Grusty / Weakus lives). Wimpus desperately seeks the approval of his father. He speaks of how his father changed once the transformation happened. Not only had his father become a much younger and stronger teenager from being a frail elderly man, but he forgot about what was important in life and had become shallow and materialistic.
Hope: Hope is one of three triplets (the other two being Frisk and Chara). All three non binary siblings were very close. When Chara died at the hands of the monsters on the surface, Hope declared themselves the ruling commander of the Underground and swore vengeance upon monsters. Frisk was disgusted with the way their sibling acquired the attitude that justice had to be served toward monsters and decided to move out of Underground Central Command and into the ruins. Hope realizes the only way to break the barrier monsters put in place to keep humans underground, is to collect 7 essences of LOVE and become so powerful that they can shatter the barrier. After breaking the barrier, Hope swore they would cause as much pain and suffering as they could toward monsters. Hope has an interest in country western clothing as well as weaponary as evidenced by their room in central command. They attack in battle using a revolver. (Neutral Spoiler: After Hope's initial battle with Asriel, they realize that vengeance won't bring back Chara and killing all monsters is irrational. After Hope apologizes, Goodie kills them and steals all of the monster essences of LOVE.) (Spoiler: After Goodie kills Hope both times, Hope has a yellow soul).
Goodie Gumdrop: (Spoilers: Goodie Gumdrop is a gumdrop cooked up by Calmcalla. The main ingredients are monster dust and a the human soul of determination. Calmcalla initially cooked up this gumdrop as food which whomever ate it could not only break the barrier but conquer the world. Things did not go as planned as the gumdrop came to life. Since the monster dust used to create Goodie came from a very evil and sinister monster, Goodie inherited those traits. (BIG spoiler: The human soul used as an ingredient to create Goodie was Chara's soul). Goodie adopts the philosophy Strike First or be Struck Down.
Chara: Main's best friend. When Main falls into the underground, Chara is there to help Main up and make Main a part of their family. Chara, Frisk and Hope all take in Main as an honorary sibling. Chara is killed by monsters when they go to the surface with Main's soul to scatter their dust in a village called Home. Chara has a great love for monsters but in regards to humankind is rather distant and shy with the exception of their relationship with their siblings. (BIG Spoilers: After the barrier is shattered, Chara stays down in the Underground because they don't feel they belong on the surface. Nothing Asriel does can convince Chara to leave.)
