Discussion: how to conclusively identify the cooked or otherwise non-functional part?

I recently built a few fuzz factories. They were my first adventure into not using pre-packaged kits.

On one of them at least the drive pot seems to be FUBAR. It gives no signal until %90 engaged then ALL THE DRIVE!

My naive solution would be to launch a shot from the old parts cannon, and see what I get. My second most naive solution is to break out the dmm and see what she says.

How could I make this process more efficient? Is there any way I could identify if I am cooking the pot when soldering or if it was defective from go? Any general thoughts?
