Soaking beans for slow cooker?

What determines the amount of time needed to soak dried beans? I bought some Rancho Gordo cassoulet beans, and the instructions on the side didn't include soaking. I was surprised. The company also talks about freshness of the dried beans, which I hadn't considered before. Is that a factor? Based on internet research, it seems like soaking beans helps lessen gas after eating.

I'm making a slow cooker cassoulet, and the recipes I've found don't agree on whether to soak the beans beforehand. They also have different cooking times. Do I just need to cook them longer if I don't soak then?
