I have a starter that I keep in my fridge that I use once to twice a week to make absolutely delicious sourdough loaves. This morning, I woke up and decided that I would experiment and use the starter I prepped and left in the proofer last night and try and make tortillas in a non-stick pan.
I mixed in a few teaspoons of salt into the overnight sponge, and then started frying dollops of it spread thin into the greased pan.
I noticed while cooking them that they had a slight odor, but I didn't realize it was coming from the tortillas themselves. When I sat down with my breakfast burrito, after eating about half of it the taste really slammed into me... and it tasted like 100% pure fish. It was absolutely rancid and foul tasting.
How can my starter, which makes such delicious bread, turn into tortillas that made me want to throw up and rinse my mouth out with rubbing alcohol? What did I do wrong? What the hell did I just eat?
