Hi folks,
I'd like to get my groomsmen something that will last ideally their lifetime, or at least a couple decades. I would like it to be something they will actually appreciate and get use out of. I would like it to be something with a little class. I feel like a flask is maybe overdone, so I'd like to avoid flasks, and avoid anything cliche or cheesy (I know that's subjective). Selfishly(?), I'd like them to use these things down the years and think back on me, my wedding, and on our friendship.
From my research on groomsmen threads on this sub + elsewhere online, I think some of the best options feel like:
- ~8" chef's knife e.g. a Wustof ($100!)
- a Leatherman e.g. Wave ($90!), Wingman ($40)
I'd also consider maybe throwing in a Zippo lighter (~$20 inc. fluid). I'll also try and find time two write them each a thoughtful, handwritten note.
My groomsmen are a mixed bag, so I'm not sure if 1 thing would fit all of them. I've tried to add a bit of detail below to help with any recommendations.
- Groomsman 1 is a lady
- Likes cooking, reading, writing, brunching, drinking wine (and sometimes whisky or cocktails), doesn't really like sports.
- Thoughts She is definitely 'one of the guys' although not a tomboy and IDK if she'd appreciate or get use out of the Leatherman. She and her spouse would get great use out of a Wustof (although I'd need to find out if they already have one).
- Groomsman 2 is a dude
- Likes cooking in the kitchen and outdoor BBQ, sports a bit, console gaming, drinking whisky, drinking wine
- Thoughts There's a console game I know he wants but he hasn't got yet. Although that's like $50 and although I know he'll have a lot of fun with it, in 2 years it won't get used anymore. He cooks a lot, so if he doesn't already have a nice chef's knife, I know that would go over well. He's not particularly handy, but I'm sure he'd get use out of the Leatherman now and then over the years.
- Groomsman 3 is a programmer dude, recent father, is the only one of us who drives regularly
- Likes tech stuff e.g. Google Home, Apple stuff, likes drinking wine
- Thoughts Hard to buy for because I don't know him massively well. I don't want to get him tech stuff that will be obsolete in a couple of years. Maybe a Leatherman.
- Groomsman 4 is a dude
- Likes to make beats, listen to music & go to shows, doesn't really like whisky but does like to drink cocktails and sometimes beers, likes yoga & hiking.
- Thoughts He does cook food at home a bunch, I think largely to be frugal and healthy although I don't think he's particularly into cooking. Also not particularly a handy man, although he lives alone so would likely try and fix stuff himself as needed. I think he'd get good use out of either a chef's knife or a Leatherman.
- Groomsman 5 is a dude
- Likes to cook in the kitchen and outdoor BBQ, watch NFL on TV & go to games, travel to other countries, get high, drink whisky/wine/beer, likes console gaming
- Thoughts If he doesn't already have one, I'm sure he and his spouse would equally like a Leatherman or chef's knife.
- Groomsman 6 is my best man
- Likes to write, read, listen to music & go to shows, gym, drink/socialize, watch sports,
- Thoughts He has a tiny apartment, so I can't get him anything physically sizable. He likes playing music but doesn't have his guitar or amp with him due to space. I feel like maybe the Leatherman Wave would be a good choice here. He's not particularly a handy-man, but he lives with his GF and I can see times when he might need to tighten something or cut something or whatever and this may come in handy.
- Groomsman 7 is a child of maybe 8 years of age
- Likes uh, kid stuff? Magic tricks?
- Dislikes no idea
- Thoughts No idea. Any help? I could get him a miniature Leatherman, as he might be old enough to think its cool and be responsible with it. I think I got a mini Leatherman at about that age or maybe a couple years older? I could always ask his dad to check, although it'd be nice if his dad was surprised that I got him a gift. I'd love any help here.
Closing thoughts/questions:
It seems like I could get 5 Leathermans for the groomsmen & best man. Then maybe chef's knife for the groomslady—unless that's weird & sexist for her to be literally the only person with something different, especially as it happens to be a kitchen item. Although that's a ton of cash. Ideally I could get all these guys something closer to $50 each. I know the Leatherman Wingman is in that budget range, but is it that much of a step down from the Wave that it would suck a bit by comparison? Or could I maybe get 4 groomsmen the Wingman, and my best man gets the Wave?
