2017 Camping Q&A

First off, I will answer some of the most basic camping questions. I will do my best, but I personally have only ever done tent camping. Any glamping, RV or carefree camping information will come from what I have found online. If you have done any of these camping options and have any input, feel free to chime in and I'll add it.

All information on locations so far is based off of last year. If any of this changes when they come out with the updated maps, I will change it accordingly. I pretty much did a quick copy and paste of my Camping Q&A from last year and changed things around too include the new camping options. If you see any mistakes let me know and I'll change them.

MAPS FROM 2016

GENERAL/PREMIER TENT CAMPING

  • Arrival for premier tent camping (festival entrance is on the lower left hand side of the map) starts at 12:00 noon on Wednesday (AND ONLY WEDNESDAY) June 14th 2017. The later you wait to arrive on Wednesday may force you to be placed in the general tent camping lots. Basic rule of thumb for premier campers is to arrive as early as you can. The closer you arrive to midnight, the greater your odds of not getting your spot in premier.
  • Premier camping is north of the festival grounds. You WILL be isolated from the "outside world" so to speak. What I mean by this is that it is very difficult to leave the campgrounds to go out into town if you forgot something because of how far away you are. You can theoretically walk out of the campsite into town, but you're looking at many hours of your day wasted doing this. If you're staying the entire weekend, make sure you have enough of everything (food, booze, etc) to last for 5 days until you leave on Monday.
  • Arrival for general tent camping (festival entrance is on the northeast side of Route 1 and the entrance is shared by general tent camping, carefree camping, all RV camping and glamping) starts at 12:01AM on Thursday June 15th 2017. IIRC there is no cutoff time for arriving to general tent camping.
  • As far as amenities go, premier and general are identical. A common misconception is that premier camping is considered "VIP" camping. This is not the case. You will still have to use portapotties and still pay for showers. The extra money you pay for premier is for the luxury of being closer to the festival.
  • Google Street view of the location of THE SOUTH HUB
  • Showers at THE SOUTH HUB
  • It was figured out through googlemaps after last years Firefly that the furthest premier tent camping spots are the same distance as the closest general tent camping spots. Keep this in mind if you haven't bought your camping passes yet. If you ask anybody who has tent camped before at Firefly, they will tell you to just pony up the money (or take off of work an extra day if you can) for premier tent camping. That walk back to general tent camping can feel like an eternity when you've been on your feet all day. Especially if you've got some of the furthest spots which can be up to 1.5 miles.
  • Firefly says you're allowed to have up to 6 people per campsite. Again, if you talk to anybody who has gone in the past, they will say 6 people is far too many people for an individual campsite. I believe this to be a legal statement on Red Frog's behalf based on Dover fire code. You can fit 4 people snuggly. Anymore than that it starts to get uncomfortable IMO.
  • WHAT IF I HAVE MULTIPLE CAMPSITES? This is a very common practice at Firefly. You can have as many campsites as you want to pay for. If you want the space of two campsites but are only taking one car, you can absolutely do that. Just make sure to tell the staff that are ushering you into your campsites that you have two campsites. If you are going down with friends in multiple cars and each car is planning on going to the campsites, you need to make sure you guys are behind one another in line when entering the camping area./
  • WHAT ARE THE VIBES LIKE WHEN TENT CAMPING? Vibes can vary. The majority of the time, it's one big party. I personally have always compared my tent camping experience to drinking beers with friends and cooking out all weekend while listening to some awesome music.
  • Finally, for tent camping, here is a checklist of items that you might find helpful. I know it says it's a Bonnaroo checklist, but you'll need the same things when camping at Firefly.

RV CAMPING

  • Labeled aerial view of camping on the south side of the festival
  • Google Street view of RV camping
  • Google Street view of the location of the south hub
  • Showers at the south hub
  • Wednesday Premier RV campers will arrive on Wednesday along with the premier tent campers and includes: 25’ X 45’ camping space for one (1) RV; Access to shower facilities; Premier camping location in close proximity to the festival entrance; Dry, 30 amp, and 50 amp options available.
  • General RV campers will arrive on Thursday and includes: 25’ X 45’ camping space for one (1) RV; Access to shower facilities
  • Infield RV campers you guys will be located inside the speedway and includes: RV power & water hookups; Shower Fast Passes (access via camping wristband); One (1) complimentary servicing of RV waste; Access to the Infield Lounge
  • All RV camping is on the south side of the festival along with general tent camping. You will have your own section so general campers can't walk through freely. RV camping will be closer to the gates compared to general camping.
  • The vibe I get from RV camping back at the RV sites are that they like to party, but know when it's bed time. Definitely more mellow than tent camping.

CAREFREE CAMPING

  • Labeled aerial view of camping on the south side of the festival
  • Google Street view of the location of the south hub
  • Showers at the south hub
  • This seems to be the option most used by people who want to camp but are flying in and can't carry camping gear on the plane with them.
  • As far as proximity to the gates go, you will be between general camping and RV camping.
  • Check-in Thursday; Preferred check-in location at the main entrance to Dover Downs. Includes: Tent, sleeping bags, air mattress (all yours to keep, if you want them).
  • Carefree Campsites are approx. 10'x15', just large enough to hold the tent. Your car is parked in a lot across the street (Dover Leipsic Road), and comes with in/out privileges. It is not parked at your campsite.
  • Carefree camping is closer than most of General camping, and is directly across from the South Hub (food trucks/showers/vendors).
  • Carefree Camping looks like this.
  • Unsure of vibe.

GLAMPING

  • Labeled aerial view of camping on the south side of the festival
  • Google Street view of the location of the south hub
  • Showers at the south hub
  • All glamping check-ins are on Thursday June 15th, 2017
  • Basic Glamping (2- or 4-person): Includes: 20x45 ft campsite with space for a car or SUV; shower fast passes; DOES NOT INCLUDE PERSONAL POWER SOURCE OR AIR CONDITIONING

  • Geo-Glamping (NEW FOR 2017): Includes: Private air conditioned tent for 2 people; 20x45 ft campsite with space for a car or SUV; One (1) queen size Intellibed Posture Perfect Mattress w/ beetle kill pine wood frame and bamboo linen bedding; Complimentary sponsor swag including Cotopaxi Del Dia Bags, Revolar Personal Safety Device, and more; Lovesac Citysac Chair & Squattoman; Soundwall Speaker System; iPad for music streaming & hospitality; Multi-colored mood lighting and Himalayan salt lamp with power source for personal electronics; Large lock box and clothing rack for personal belongings; Geo Glamping exclusive Champagne toast; Air-conditioned shower and restroom facilities; 24/7 concierge service; Access to exclusive Glamping Lounge
  • Vibe seems to be the most laid back of all camping options.

GROUP CAMPING

  • Includes: 40’ x 40′ tent only camping space for up to twenty five (25) people; Access to shower facilities; Overnight parking for up to six (6) vehicles with in and out privileges; Group camping seems to be the equivalent of tent camping but is more lenient on how you get to set up your campsite (you're not restricted to just a 10x30ft space.)

I feel like I have covered the very minimum basics for camping. Sorry for such little info on everything other than tent camping but like I mentioned, I have never done any other option. If you have any information on those that you would like to share, please comment below and I will add it. I'm certain I have left a lot out that I or anybody else could answer right away. If you have any questions, PLEASE feel free to ask away.

See you guys in June!
